What MCB trips are telling you about your wiring

Nobody enjoys walking to the DB box in the dark. But a breaker that trips is doing exactly what it was installed to do — and the pattern of the tripping is a diagnostic message. Before you call anyone (including us), note two things: when it trips and what was running. Those two facts usually narrow the fault to one of four stories.

It trips at the same time every day

A schedule means a load, not a ghost. Evening trips almost always trace to the kitchen window: rice cooker, kettle, air fryer and microwave stacking onto one circuit that was sized for a 1990s kitchen. This is an overload pattern — the wiring may be perfectly healthy but carrying more than its rating. The fix is rebalancing circuits or adding a dedicated line, not a full rewire.

It trips the instant you switch one thing on

Immediate tripping when a specific appliance starts points at that appliance or its socket — a short circuit rather than an overload. Test it in another room’s socket. If the breaker follows the appliance around the house, the appliance is your culprit and the repair bill belongs to it, not your wiring.

It trips in the rain

Moisture trips are the ELCB’s department: current leaking to earth through damp. Outdoor sockets, garden lighting and porch fittings are the usual suspects — water finds a path inside a junction box and the earth-leakage device correctly refuses to allow it. Rain-pattern trips deserve prompt attention, because the same leak path that trips a breaker can energise a wet surface.

It trips randomly, with no pattern at all

The uncomfortable one. Random trips with no correlating load are how ageing insulation behaves — resistance breaking down intermittently as temperature and humidity move through the day. This is the pattern that justifies an insulation-resistance test, circuit by circuit. Sometimes one tired run is to blame and a partial rewire settles it; the test tells us instead of guessing.

Two rules regardless of pattern

First: a breaker that trips repeatedly is never “fixed” by holding it up or swapping it for a bigger one. The breaker is the alarm; disabling the alarm does not put out the fire. Second: warm switch plates, buzzing from the DB box, or any smell of hot plastic upgrades the situation from “book a visit” to “call now”.
